In spite of the large number of visitors the area remains a reviving oasis in a major city thanks to its gardens, green roofs, independent energy sources and a rain walter-collecting system. The solar panel system produces enough electricity to supply the whole center! A permanent exhibition on the walls explains these and other projects to interested visitors and children. The ufaFabrik eco-office works on the possibilites to create links between culture, ecology, economy and community and how to empower citizens to take part in the development of their urban surroundings.


The rainwater form a roof and paved paths area of ca. 8000 square meters flows, through the canalization into the water reservoir. With an annual average rainfall of about 500 mm, around 4000 cubic meters of rainwater can be collected to cover the water demand for toilet flush and irrigation.

A settling tank is used to separate the big dragged particles – Rocks, sand and mud sink to the bottom, floating particles such as leaves, paper and wood are collected by gravel by flowing over in the second tank. After, the roughly purified water is pumped to the plants-and-soil-filter. There, through the substrates of fine shale, the remaining suspended soils are removed. Soil organisms on the roots of reeds, rushes, water lilies and cattails convert the other impurities in minerals which are taken by plants as fertilizer. A cistern located under the soil-filter stores the treated water and a pressurizer-system distributes is through the buildings.




The solar-energy-system on the roofs produces up to 53 Kilowatt of electricity on sunny days. The not-consumed electricity supplies the public grid. Approximately 37000 Kilowatt/hour are produced per year. The complex consists of different types of modules, cells, inverters, interconnection techniques and tracking systems.

Wind energy is also generated here –the installed 3-meter-long Rotor produces 700Watt.

To reduce the energy consumption, some buildings were dammed with natural materials, such as cellulose fiber made from recycled paper (impregnated with fire retardant and pest protectant harmless mineral salts) and sheep wool. One building is constructed out of straw bales.

Many buildings feature green roofs, because they not only contribute to the thermal insulation but also improve the microclimate.




Annually, about 1,000 m3 of waste will be produce in the ufaFabrik, which is separated, recycled, reused and reduced in a 85%. Glass, paper, aluminum, plastics, bulk waste, scrap wood and compostable waste and hazardous waste are differentiated.

Approximately 20% of the waste is compostable. The organic waste is lodged in Worm-boxes to produce humus. Even though the process is quite slow and requires maintenance, it worth it - the compost-worms transform the organic waste through their digestion in nutrient-rich humus (a high-quality compost). Through their digging moves they loose the earth and provide a better aeration of the soil, whicht is beneficial for other organisms. This compost helps plants to absorb nutrients and stimulates growth. In addition, it is an effective remedy against pest infestation, such as Blight.
